Elements Of Hieroglyphics and Egyptian Antiquities by Marquis Spineto - First Edition 1829 (Book 1)
A handsomely bound first edition of Lectures on the Elements of Hieroglyphics and Egyptian Antiquities by the Marquis Spineto, published in London in 1829 by C. J. G. & F. Rivington.
Produced during the formative years of modern Egyptology, this remarkable work examines ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics, language, history, religion and antiquities. Spineto’s study reflects the intense scholarly interest surrounding the early decipherment of Egyptian writing and provides a fascinating insight into nineteenth-century understanding of the ancient world.
This copy is complete with all eleven original folding lithographic plates, depicting hieroglyphic alphabets, royal cartouches, inscriptions and scenes from Egyptian monuments. The plates are an especially striking feature of the work and retain strong, clearly printed imagery.
The volume has been attractively rebound in red half leather over marbled boards, with raised spine bands, gilt lettering, decorative gilt tooling and complementary marbled endpapers. Its distinguished presentation makes it an impressive display piece as well as a work of considerable historical and scholarly interest.
